This reader and friend submitted the following flyer for an art adventure in San Diego, California. Read more of her story below the photographs and see more of her project at www.poetrybench.com. We had the dedication today and it went well. All the builders sat in a circle and talked about why they came back
each week. It was primarily because of the all women crew, they felt safe to make mistakes; and because I didn't
do much assigning but just directed enough for them to figure things out on their own, that really empowered them
and also being in the earth, its so magical and healing....
Some plan to build a bench but they all wanted to help me with the hut in my canyon. So I am making plans for that. It's been an interesting project. Some of it is on the website but basically I think we need more women to become leaders and since I'm not much of a leader I thought I would empower a few others. Well they came and worked like crazy, bought all the materials and made great lunches, and wha-la, we made the bench in four weekends. I have no idea why it was so successful. So many people came by to tell us thanks and how they love it and refer their friends, it makes me think nothing is going on in San Diego if a bench gets so much attention. So it has just worked out, and I'm sure I was listening close to my intuition when I stepped up and wrote the proposal to the park. This quote guided me to take this on: "When I dare to be powerful - to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid." --AUDRE LORDE So now I'm thinking art benches; for weavers, spinners, photographers, etc. We will see where it all goes. I have to tell you how I got women to sign up. I ran an ad to my groups, friends, and said come to my house for muffins made in my earthen bread oven, and when they got here I had a sign up sheet. When people sign their name its helps a bit. So with all these women I knew I could do it with only women and children, so it made them take on everything. I'm still in awe of the hard work and commitment. We have an article coming out this weekend too, so I will put that on the website. Thanks for your inspiration, Kiko. The oven changed my life and made me heathy and strong. Be well my friend and teacher, Candy |
